At first I was kind of enjoying the freedom that being a second year fashion student brings.. but now I'm kind of hating life and just want the year to be over!! The brief we have been given is SO open I've thought of too many ideas and I'm starting to struggle to get them out of my head, onto paper and into a garment.
To all of those who think fashion design is just scribbling out a few designs and quickly making them, it's not! It sucks the life out of you and takes half your life away trying to get the perfect sleeve!
I started the project by looking at a pair of jeans, Diesel Jeans to be specific.
Here's a pic of the jeans, complete with my toes!
Now we were supposed to take these jeans apart but considering they cost my boyfriend just short of 100 quid there wasn't a chance in hell that was going to happen, so I just had to use my imagination.
We were also asked to explore the history of these wonderful jeans. This was quiet interesting I found out a few things I didn't know before, like jeans were worn by gold miners! Interesting fact for you!
This is a little board I made, it took me a few hours to make and then when my tutor saw it she said it would have been better if I'd actually made this out of real paper in my sketchbook so it had a "tangable" effect.
I'm not going to redo it though and anyway I like it!!
So as you can see Jeans where a big item of clothing in a number of people working lives including Cowboys!
This is where my project started to get interesting! I did a tonne of research into cowboys and the wild west and dived right in to the project and was loving swimming around in the cowboy waters and found loads of cowboy treasure!!
I started to look at cattle ranges which I found rather interesting and started to create some leather samples.
As you can see, I was really enjoying exploring different techniques and experimenting with different hides, when........ I realized I had to make something for the technique to go on!! EEK! It all went downhill from here!
Like I mentioned earlier I had been looking at cattle, you won't believe how many different types there are! This one was my favourite, the colour, the humpy thing and the neck looked like something I could progess with.
So.. This is what I initially came up with. I was trying to make a cowl neck but no matter how much I pleated and tucked it just wouldn't work in the fabric I had, I like the over all shape of the jacket but I really want the pockets to be a big bold shape like the hump on the back of the bull above.
I've only just realised how rude this actually looks! HAHA!
This is actually me attempting to vaccum mould a piece of fabric around 2 bowls but it never worked in the end. The fabric had to be wet so that when it dried it kept it's new shape but with it being in a vaccum bag it was impossible for it to dry! I think I'm just going to have to pattern cut some 3D shapes.
This is a side panel detail I decided to add, it was inspired by the ruffling up of the skin on the Bulls legs.
With the first cowl neck inspired drape not really doing what I wanted it to I started to experiment with different types of pleating to create different shapes, these didn't really turn out how I wanted them to either.
I did kind of like this one, but it was just far too feminine for the over all look.
This was heading more towards the direction I wanted!
Finally I felt like I was getting back up the hill!
This is what is currently staring at me from the other side of my room, I started to play around with braiding string and lengths of fabric to form a kind of lasso. I have no idea where this is heading and I only have 3 days before hand in! HELP!
I'll keep you posted on how I get on!

good luck! I'm sure you'll do great
